With further reference to your letter E.

261/2 dated 25th. November, 1907, making enquiries about the

provision of explosives and quinine, we would refer you in

answer to paragraphs 1 to 5 of the Chief Resident Engineer's

letter No. 50 dated 11th. January which read as follows:-

I am in receipt of your general letter No. 7 ry

"and note the contents and as regards the questions raised in

"paragraphs 3 I would reply that the dynamite and other ex-

*plosives are ordered through a local firm who are agents for

"Nobel'e explosives.

I have made an arrangement with them to deliver

"explosives at the Railway Wharf at the following rates if

"ordered in quantities of one thousand pounds and over:-

*Blasting Gelatine at £140 per ton of 2,000 lbs.

"Dynamite

"Gelignite

It would be very inconvenient and expensive to

"order large quantities direct from home on account of the

*difficulty of storing several months supply. By this arrange-

-ment my magazines are only built to hold about one ton of "explosives and there is no difficulty in replenishing them from

"the depot of Messrs. Jardine, Matheson and Company, the agents
